Rabbits and birds are the pets most often left out of grooming conversations, and they are the ones for whom a bad grooming experience does the most damage. Both are prey animals. Both are far more fragile than they look. Neither should ever be handled the way a dog is.
Rabbits are never bathed
This is the rule that surprises owners most. A wet rabbit is a rabbit at serious risk. Rabbits cannot regulate their temperature well when wet, their dense coat takes hours to dry to the skin, and the panic of being submerged can trigger a stress response severe enough to be fatal. A rabbit that has soiled itself is spot-cleaned, never bathed.
What a rabbit groom actually involves
Brushing and moult support. Rabbits moult heavily and unpredictably, sometimes in visible patches. Because they groom themselves constantly and cannot vomit, swallowed fur can cause a life-threatening blockage. Regular brushing during a moult is genuinely preventative care.
Nail trims. House rabbits do not wear their nails down naturally. Overgrown nails change how a rabbit sits and moves, and can lead to sore hocks.
Hygiene checks. The area under the tail is checked and cleaned. In warm months this matters enormously — a soiled rabbit can attract flies, and flystrike develops fast and is often fatal.
Coat and skin check. Long-haired breeds such as Angoras mat quickly, and mats on a rabbit’s thin skin must be clipped away rather than pulled.
Birds: less is more
A bird groom is deliberately brief — usually only a few minutes of handling. The aim is to do what is necessary and stop.
Nail trims keep a bird gripping its perch properly and stop nails catching on cage bars and toys. Beak checks catch overgrowth or misalignment early, though a healthy beak that wears normally should be left alone. Gentle misting supports natural preening and helps birds in air-conditioned homes, where the air is far drier than the humidity most species evolved in.
Wing clipping
We do not clip wings by default. It is a decision with real consequences for a bird’s confidence, muscle tone and safety, and it belongs to the owner after a proper conversation — never as a routine add-on.
Why home is non-negotiable for small pets
For a dog, a car journey is an inconvenience. For a rabbit or a bird, it can be a genuine physiological stress event. Transport means noise, vibration, temperature change and the smell of unfamiliar animals, all at once.
Grooming these pets a few metres from their own enclosure removes every one of those factors. The session is short, the environment is quiet, and the pet goes straight back to familiar surroundings afterwards.
If you own a rabbit or a bird in Dubai and have never had them professionally groomed, start with a check-up appointment rather than a full session. It gives you a baseline and gives your pet a calm first experience.
