Most owners have never seen inside a grooming van. Because the door is closed during the session, it can feel like a black box. It should not be. Here is exactly what happens, in order, during a full mobile groom.

Before anything else: the coat check

The groomer greets your pet outside the van and runs both hands through the coat, checking for mats, lumps, sore spots, ear condition and nail length. This takes two or three minutes and it decides everything that follows.

If the coat is badly matted, you will be told before the session starts — including whether a shorter clip is the only humane option. No responsible groomer brushes out a severe mat; it is painful and it damages skin.

Step one: brush-out and de-shedding

Loose undercoat comes out first, dry, before any water touches the coat. This matters more than most people realise: wet undercoat tightens, and bathing a matted coat sets the mats permanently. A thorough dry brush-out is what makes the rest of the groom possible.

Step two: the bath

The van carries its own heated water supply. Shampoo is matched to the coat and skin — a de-shedding formula for a double coat, a gentle hypoallergenic one for sensitive skin, a medicated wash if there is an existing condition. The coat is rinsed twice, because leftover shampoo is a common cause of post-groom itching.

Step three: drying

Drying is done by hand with a low-noise, adjustable dryer while the groomer works the coat with a brush. There is no cage dryer. This is the slowest part of the session, and it is also the part that makes a coat look genuinely finished rather than merely clean.

Step four: the haircut

Clipper work first for the body, then scissor work for the face, feet and tail. The length is whatever you agreed at the coat check — a breed-standard trim, a shorter summer clip, or simply a tidy-up. In Dubai’s heat, many owners choose shorter than they would elsewhere, though double-coated breeds should never be shaved to the skin.

Step five: nails, ears and finishing

Nails are trimmed and filed smooth. Ears are checked and cleaned. Eye corners are wiped, paw pads trimmed, and the sanitary area tidied. A final brush-out and a spritz of pet-safe finishing spray, and the groom is done.

Step six: the handover

Your pet comes back to the door and the groomer tells you what they found — a hot spot forming, an ear that looked irritated, nails that are wearing unevenly. This is genuinely useful information, and it is easy to miss if your pet is handed over at a busy salon counter.

How long it takes

A small, well-maintained coat takes about an hour. A large or heavily matted dog can take two hours or more. Cats are usually faster, because sessions are deliberately kept short.

You are welcome to watch any part of the session. Most owners look in once, see their pet standing calmly on the table, and go back inside.
